SPELLING OF TOWN NAMES

Spelling of Town Names

The RTRF website evolved (and includes excerpts) from my two books (both out of print):

1. Jewish Roots in Poland
2. Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova

Regarding the spelling of town names in Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Lithuania, both the books and the website use the transliterated spelling from the Cyrillic/Russian version (rather than current spelling), for example:

Grodno – not Hrodna
Rovno – not Rivne
Lvov – not Lviv or Lemberg or Lwow
Odessa - not Odesa (current spelling)
Kishinev - not Chisinau
Ataki – not Otachi

The reason for this is that at the time our ancestors lived in these places and the documents were created and recorded, the Russian spelling was used (not Ukrainian or Belarussian or Lithuanian).

Elsewhere in the books and on the RTRF website, where we are referring to a current address in Ukraine, for example, then the current spellings are used.
