Dr. Sergey R. Kravtsov

Dr. Sergey R. Kravtsov is a Research Fellow at the Center for Jewish Art, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, he was trained in 1973–1978 as an architect at the Lviv Polytechnic University. He worked in Lviv as an urban planner and architect involved in documentation and conservation of historical sites. He received his doctoral degree in architectural history from the Institute for the Theory and History of Architecture in Moscow in 1993, and moved to Israel in 1994. The same year he was employed by the Center for Jewish Art, and in that framework he is continuously working on his research of synagogue architecture in Eastern and Central Europe. On parallel with academic activity, he worked as a landscape architect on the physical design of the Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum at Shlomo Aronson Architects Ltd. Dr. Kravtsov has published about 60 essays on history of urban planning and synagogue architecture; he has authored and co-authored three books.
